The conference, sponsored by John E. Messervey, President of the National Family Business Council, will offer four sessions exploring a variety of diverse topics including developing and maintaining family wealth, trends in investments, cyber security, technological advances, human resources, and honoring the family legacy. Linda Mack will be speaking on how Family Offices can successfully attract and retain top talent in a session entitled, “Winning the Race for Talent in your Family Office.” The focus of Linda’s talk is to describe the key components of a process enabling families to successfully recruit and retain the right talent for their office. “When Family Office searches fail it is usually due to one of two reasons; they hire someone they trust but not qualified to perform the job, or they hire someone who is technically skilled but not the right culture fit.” According to Linda, defining the role and prerequisites for success must include not only levels of expertise but personal characteristics and attributes needed to mesh with the family’s values and philosophy. “Culture fit trumps skill in the world of the Family Office,” counsels Linda.
During her presentation, Linda will describe in detail the process that will enable the family to get it right the first time and every time. She will emphasize the importance of a well-conceived plan by which both the position and the culture requirements are defined. “In the absence of established criteria, there is really no way to identify and assess a potential candidate. I plan to share a best practice model to identify, assess, and hire leadership talent a Family Office needs.” In addition, Linda will cover how to design a platform for success and retention. “Many believe the hard work is over once the process results in a great hire,” cautions Linda. “Motivating and retaining talent is just as important.”
Linda strongly believes that whether a family does it themselves or enlists the help of an outside professional, it is critically important to plan and execute a well thought out process. “You only get one chance to find your ideal candidate when you do a search. You cannot afford to miss finding them because of a poorly defined pursuit. You also can’t afford to lose them once you find them due to lack of attention to the onboarding and retention of the new leader in their role with the family.”
Finding and keeping the right leader in a Family Office makes all the difference in the family achieving their long term objectives. The audience will leave with a deeper understanding of how to effectively win the race for securing that talent.
