CHICAGO, IL —
In 2021, the Indiana University – Bloomington Maurer School of Law established a program to prepare its students and graduates to be effective members of family offices and the professional firms that serve family offices. Part of this program involves giving students internship opportunities in family offices and related professional firms, often leading to permanent positions. To prepare students, the university is expanding the law school curriculum, beginning with a classes the winter of 2022-2023 on “Making and Managing Family Office Investments.”
On November 10, a formal announcement regarding the Family Office Program was made at an inaugural event in Chicago. A number of panels were organized to explore how the relationships between family offices and the professionals that serve them have evolved to address the changing nature of family offices going forward. A number of Family Offices and related professionals attended the conference held at the offices of Kirkland and Ellis.
Linda Mack served as a panelist on the topic of the evolving role of professionals serving family offices. Mike Flannery from Duchossois was the moderator. Panelists joining Linda were attorneys who currently work in or with Family Offices to offer valuable insights into the nature of their respective roles.
Linda, who coined the industry term ‘expert generalist’ discussed why attorneys are highly qualified to serve family offices at the C-suite level. “Attorneys are necessarily analytical and understand the implications of decisions made in running a business. They are good listeners, great communicators and ask the right questions.” Linda emphasized the specific legal and business curriculum of “building blocks” developing at IU would help prepare those interested in leadership roles within Family Offices.
Linda believes those earning JD/MBA degrees are increasingly pursuing roles beyond the traditional positions in law firms advising family office clients from “outside.” According to Linda, those who have the appropriate experience and are a suitable “culture fit” for the family, can make a tremendous contribution as a leader in a family office overseeing outside specialists and working a myriad of transactions both inside and outside on the family’s behalf.
“At Mack International we see the profile of the most effective family office leaders is evolving both in skill level and personal characteristics. The premier candidates for the C-suite will have strong business and financial acumen, be technologically savvy, have the ability to think critically and bring a strategic and proactive mindset to their job. Individuals with a strong legal and business background and education will be in increasingly high demand in the future.”
